Kindness Matters

Guest Contributor: Heather Wilkerson

Five years ago I began a journey of performing one random act of kindness every day for 365 days. It was so much more than I could have ever anticipated.

My mission was to bring a smile to someone, even if it was for a short moment. I also wanted to inspire others who don’t normally give, to give without having expectations of receiving.

Random acts of kindness don’t have to cost anything. Examples are; giving a stranger a compliment on their smile, returning a shopping cart for an elderly person, mowing the lawn for a neighbor, writing a thank you note to a teacher, and the list goes on and on.

I believe that I gained more by giving than those on the receiving end. It was heartwarming to see how the smallest of gestures could truly brighten the day of others. I was inspired by a friendship I made with a complete stranger who was going through some tough times but always managed to do it with a smile on her face. I didn’t always see the reactions to the daily acts of kindness as I did many things anonymously. Giving isn’t about the recognition; it’s about how you make the other person feel.

I strongly believe that if you give to others you will always be taken care of. In fact in the past when my life would seem a little out of balance, I would reevaluate and see how I could give back more. I continue to do this today.

Today I encourage you to be the sunshine in someone’s day. Think of others before you think of yourself. Strive to inspire with your actions. Above all, kindness matters.
